Breaking It Down

Zephra (Stephanie) wrote a post yesterday that got me thinking (smell the burn). She said that she was afraid of the thought of having to lose so much weight.

Sweetie, I am with you. I located a Healthy Weight Calculator and punched in my height. The results gave me a weight range, that I should fall into, based on my BMI (Body Mass Index). I am 5'4" so I should weigh between 108 and 145 lbs.

I too, need to lose an Olsen twin.

Now, what came to mind, while I was reading your post, is that we set ourselves up for failure. We look at that big number and immediately think that there is no way we can succeed. And me? The Emotional Eater? Well, you get the picture.

It's a constant and vicious cycle.

But, let's break it down. We have used the BlogHer '09 conference as our goal date. That happens in July of next year. 10 months. If you need to lose 100 lbs, that is 10 lbs. per month, and only 2 1/2 pounds per week. That is the recommended, HEALTHY amount to lose.

See? If you look at it that way, it's completely and totally POSSIBLE. Set up a weekly goal of 2 to 2 1/2 pounds per week. Feel the excitement of reaching that goal, over and over.

I vow to take my own advice. I want a fresh and new perspective. I will rejoice in each and every mini-goal I reach.

I hope you will join me.

A friend of mine has a little trick. She puts a post it over the actual numbers on her scale that says -2. She only removes it once a week but she weighs in as much as she wants. She "visualizes" her goal and most times she surpasses it! Three weeks in a row she thought -2 and make -5!

What a great idea- I, too, am overwhelmed by my goal so many times- but 2 pounds a week, yes, we can do that. :) Thanks for the idea- and I LOVE the ticker! Awesome!

taking it one day, one pound and one good choice at a time is a great way to break it down! Thanks for sharing!

I am with you. One step, baby step at a time.

It's about taking one step at a time...

What I find most interesting is that we focus so much on our weight, when in actuality we just want to be smaller, firmer, more fit. That's doesn't usually coincide with lbs...

There will be times when you lost not one single lb, but may lose several inches off your body...That is success!!

Oh, Sarah - I like the visualization thing with the scale! Now if I could just keep the 3-year-old from peeling off the post-it!

I'm adding my scale onto my main blog and...UGH...it's these last 20 lbs. are SO hard to lose!

That completely changes how you look at things. Makes things more manageable long term. Less chance for giving up on it all.

Thanks!

One caveat about the whole "2 pounds a week" thing - how accurate is your scale? Mine is pretty average, with fresh batteries (thank you, obsessed 3-year-old who wore out the old ones), and my weight has varied this week by four pounds. FOUR POUNDS. At one point I "gained" that much overnight. If that happened right before I weighed myself for the week, it would suck bigtime.

So take what the scale says with a grain of salt (or a gallon of bloating), and remember that as long as you're sticking with your plan (mostly), your figure will improve (eventually).

This is the way I've also done it too! 2 pounds is so much easier than 100!
